Litter Reduction Charter Launch & Signing Event

In the summer of 2023, BEA member Bill Godfrey pitched an idea to Brampton City Council that the City should develop a strategy to become the first litter-free city in Canada. Bill is the founder of a local community group, People Against Littering. Since 2019 he and his enthusiastic volunteers have organized and participated in hundreds of clean-up events across the City and have documented picking up over 3,000,000 pieces of litter! Despite these efforts litter remains a persistent problem that is both an eye-sore and a health hazard to visitors and residents alike.

Last fall, the City’s Community Safety and Well-being Office (CSWO) took on the challenge to organize a city-wide coordinated response to this growing problem. In the spring of 2024 they launched the “Ready, Set, Collect Litter Reduction Competition” with a tool that allows residents to track their cleanup efforts, share their results and challenge other neighbourhoods to undertake their own cleanup efforts.

Later this month CWSO is launching the Litter Reduction Charter. The event will take place on Tuesday October 22nd in the Conservatory at City Hall. Those individuals, businesses and community groups from across the city who are prepared to commit to signing the charter are welcome to attend. The BEA is one of those organizations.

Vision
To foster community participation to beautify Brampton by committing to the elimination of litter.
Goals
Collectively, we will work to:

  • Promote community engagement to foster cleaner neighbourhoods by increasing awareness on the impact of litter and encouraging positive behaviours.
  • Enhance and increase prevention measures in the community to reduce litter.
  • Review and evaluate processes and procedures within existing systems and identify opportunities for improvement.
By endorsing this Charter, we commit to taking action together in pursuit of a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable future for the City of Brampton. Collectively, we can work to create a litter-free city where residents and community leaders are empowered and equipped to contribute to the reduction of litter within their neighbourhoods, businesses, and organizations.
